Inspiring NYC’s Next Generation During Manufacturing Month 2024
October is Manufacturing Month, and ITAC celebrated by giving NYC students an inside look at today’s exciting manufacturing world. We hosted two events—one at Adaptive Design and another at MakerSpace NYC—to showcase the possibilities for careers in manufacturing, from high-tech prototyping to hands-on fabrication. With support from the Workforce Development Institute (WDI), we created engaging experiences that connected students with industry professionals, inspiring them to explore rewarding paths in manufacturing.
Manufacturing is evolving, with advancements like robotics and digital modeling creating diverse career opportunities. At ITAC, we’re dedicated to helping students envision themselves in these fields. Our events provided hands-on experiences in high-tech environments, highlighting the various pathways available.
Our first event on October 7 at Adaptive Design, a unique company that manufactures custom products for children with disabilities, allowed students to tour the facility and witness how manufacturing can make a difference. One student shared, “I liked today’s event because we got to see different machinery and how it works in the manufacturing industry.”
On October 25, students visited MakerSpace NYC, the city’s largest makerspace, located in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. With tools for woodworking, metalworking, and digital fabrication, the space sparked creativity and teamwork during a hands-on design challenge. “I liked that we were able to prototype our own design. It was really cool that we were able to learn about different manufacturing jobs,” said one participant.
These events wouldn’t have been possible without our partners at Adaptive Design and MakerSpace NYC, who are committed to education and workforce development. Robert Orchanian, a teacher from Manhattan Bridges High School, shared, “Thanks to all for the super trip! They were really engaged and loved it.”
Conclusion: A Bright Future for NYC Manufacturing
Our Manufacturing Month events were about igniting a passion for the industry among the next generation. By providing students with hands-on experiences, we aim to inspire them to envision themselves in rewarding careers that shape the future of manufacturing.
As we reflect on these successful events, ITAC remains committed to fostering connections and promoting awareness about the diverse career paths in manufacturing. We encourage our network of NYC manufacturers to continue supporting initiatives that engage young minds. Together, we can build a stronger workforce and ensure a bright future for manufacturing in New York City.
